The Dunedin Seafood Festival began this fall under silver clouds. Another cold front pushed through overnight, bringing a steady Saturday morning rain shower that hid the sunrise for hours. The rain finally cleared the coastline around 1 PM, slowly drying the puddles that had formed across town. As I drove toward downtown from the east side of the city, heading west to the Dunedin Marina, the daylight began to shift. The way the sun broke through the clouds cast a washed, silver glow over the city—as if the whole town were ready for a perfect gelatin silver print. It felt like a monochromatic photograph waiting to happen. Once the rain finally stopped, the crowds began to appear. Downtown Dunedin had been quiet during the morning downpour, but the moment the clouds broke, the locals made their way toward the marina. They carried lawn chairs and blankets, with children and dogs happily trailing along—all arriving safely after the wet weather had passed. This year marked the 26th Annual Oktobeerfest at Dunedin Brewery, a tradition that dates back to the venue’s earliest days. It is only fitting that the celebration has endured so long; Dunedin Brewery itself is a foundational piece of Florida craft beer history. Founded in 1995 by Michael and Kandi Bryant, Dunedin Brewery became Florida’s first distributing microbrewery—and it remains the oldest still in operation today. The very first keg rolled into Skip’s Bar & Grille in 1996: an Imperial Brown Ale that helped spark a craft beer movement in the Sunshine State. Nearly three decades later, the brewery stands as the anchor of Dunedin’s walkable beer district, with Oktobeerfest remaining one of its most beloved annual traditions.
